Nightclub Photography Tips & Guides

Today I have decided to spend some time, and read about nightclub photography. It seems that both nightclub and nightlife photography, exists side-by-side on Internet. However, I will write today about nightclub photography, and on later post, we will write about sites dedicated to nightlife photography.

So what exactly is nightclub photography?
Today on the Internet, there are many websites, which are dedicated to clubs, bars, parties and nightlife photography. Those websites usually have a lot of image galleries with photographs taken inside music and dance clubs around the world. Usually the owner of the website hires professional photographers, and those photographers take pictures of people, celebrating inside those clubs. So nightclub photography is all about bringing the excitement and atmosphere of people having fun in nightclubs.

Usually, most of the photographs taken inside clubs, is taken in the dark environments with consistently changing lights with different colors. Even so, some nightclubs have a more romantic atmosphere, with low light, tender lights and a low volume romantic music. Alternatively, some clubs have high-volume house music with many lights and people dancing all over the place. In order to express the atmosphere inside those clubs, a photographer must have unique skills and experience in taking photographs in those specific lighting conditions.

Some Photographers recommend using a lens with f/3 or faster, in order to take sharp images and not blurred because of camera movement.

Sometimes the image sharing websites like Flickr is a great place to gain more experience, just by viewing images online or by getting into discussions with other members in the same group. Currently, the Flickr's nightclub photography group has 1082 members and growing. On the main page, you can see some very colorful nightclub photographs, taken by photographers, which are members in that group.

Most of the photographs taken inside nightclubs are very colorful. Calls like purple, pink, green, yellow, orange and blue, of the most dominant colors in nightclub photography (as appeared on the Flickr's nightclub photography group). You can see that some of the photographs were taken with a flash all without a flash. If you want to enhance the atmosphere in the photographs, and show exactly how the atmosphere in nightclub days, you should probably shoot without a flash. However, again, some portraiture photographs taken in nightclubs, usually that photographer used a flash to take those images. If you will not use the flash to take portraiture images in nightclubs, you will get skin of a specific person turned in color, to the same color which reflects the current light that was projected in the hall.
