Canon EOS 7D Reviewed on Dpreview Website

Dpreview website has finally finished its Canon EOS 7D review. This came in the perfect moment for me, because I was looking forward to buying a new digital SLR camera and Canon EOS 7D was one of my favorite cameras in my list. Just to let you know that the Canon EOS 7D review is based on the production Canon EOD 7D with the firmware 1.0.9.

The great thing we the 7D is that it brings an affordable professional SLR camera to the customers who are searching to upgrade from the current models: 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D and the 50D, and they want to invest more money to get the more professional and more capable DSLR camera to fit their needs. Some professional photographers may even consider the Canon 7D as a backup camera in their camera bag. Nevertheless, the 7D was supposed to compete with Nikon's latest D300s and Sony's A700, which are both great enthusiast cameras, and it was not an easy task for can.

First of all, you should know that the new 7D is not a full frame camera, and it's a cropped sensor camera with the ASP-C sensor. In order for people to upgrade to this model, they want to know if this new camera is really something unique, and it is capable of providing significant improvements and extra features, which will distinguish his camera from other cheaper models. If this is the case, and probably many Canon photographers will take this upgrade path and upgrade their current DSLR to the new 7D. Another thing that we should mention is that there are many new photographers, who haven't bought any camera yet, and most of them with probably have bought the Nikon D300 DSLR, if it wasn't a Canon 7D on the market. So in order not to lose customers and to gain more customers to use Canon photography equipment, Canon released this new enthusiast camera to the market on 2009.

By looking at the first page on dpreview 7D review page, you can see that the editor (Lars Rehm and Richard Butler) have intentionally in comparison to the Canon EOS 7D to the 50D, because probably many photographers who have bought the 50D, will upgrade their camera to the 7D. By looking at the front of both cameras, you can really see a difference. However, when you look on the back side of those cameras you can see clearly that there is a difference between them. First of all, you can see that on the Canon EOS 7D the viewfinder is much larger in comparison to the 50D. The Canon 7D uses at prism viewfinder with 100% coverage in 1.0x magnification. The buttons on the 7D are arranged on the left side of the camera in comparison to the 50D buttons, which are placed right under the LCD screen. In my opinion, I think that the arrangement on the 7D is more comfortable because you can use your other hand to control your camera, so it is a more natural place for those buttons.

Continue to page 2 of the review, you can see the least of all the Canon EOS 7D specifications, including price, sensor information, image sizes, movie sizes, support of file formats, support of lenses mounts, explanation or the dust reduction feature, focus modes, ISO sensitivities, picture styles, viewfinder information etc.

On the third page, you can read about the features, or we can say the key features of the new camera. Starting from the new 18 megapixels ASP-C CMOS sensor developed by Canon itself. The main idea behind the sensor, was to develop an improved signal-to-noise ratio which can bring high quality images in low light conditions using high ISO settings.  The second thing is the new 19-point AF system, which is a welcome feature in this new DSLR. Many sports photographers will appreciate having a more auto focus points to lead them capture fast-moving objects with ease.

Now listen now guys, these brand-new viewfinder give 100% coverage and 1.0x magnification, this is a truly amazing feature that will probably make many enthusiast photographers choose this camera over the Nikon's or the Sony's. The Canon EOS 7D implements a great new 3 inch LCD display on the back, also called Clear View II LCD. The main properties of this LCD screen is reducing glare and therefore, make the usage of the screen more comfortable and readable when shooting outdoors and the many bright light conditions. Furthermore, you can read about the new metering system, custom controls, dual axis electronic label, the new flesh and a wireless flash control (we are talking about the integrated flash) and the ability to control up to three groups of four flashes each (like a control center for all your flashes, pretty amazing), environmental sealing, then you do all DIGIC processors that help the camera to achieve its eight frames per second continuous shooting, and of course the new movie features that let you shoot full high-definition videos in 30, 25 all 24 frames per second.

On page 4 you can read more about the design of the new Canon EOS 7D DSLR camera. You can see in four views: left, right, front and back, and you can magnify this image to see high resolution picture of the 7D. Dpreview talks about the construction and environmental seals that had been incorporated into this new DSLR camera. The construction is probably the same as the Canon EOS Mark II, and that means that the construction is excellent. Another information you can find on this page includes: LCD monitor, LCD control panel.

Now we have decided to jump right in and see how the new Canon EOS 7D is in comparison to the 50D in JPEG output. As you can see, the output of the 7D is absolutely amazing, it is sharp accurate and has lots of details in comparison to the 50D camera. On the second test, you see a comparison between the Canon EOS 7D and the Nikon's D300S. I'm eager to see which one will prevail in this competition, aren't you?

So the results are that there is actually not such a big difference between those to. Both cameras believer excellent quality images and because the Canon EOS 7D camera has more pixels, it can produce a more detailed image. However, what's interested, is that again I can see the clear difference in color is between those two cameras, that Canon EOS 7D images looks colder than that Nikon is high saturated images (can you see that). Actually, many people love the output of the Nikon's camera, can it be achieved on the Canon, or vice versa?

Anyways, just as we thought that we would see a clear winner in this comparison, we were wrong, image quality is virtually the same between the Nikon D300S and the Canon EOS 7D. Even in the Low noise test, it seems that they are pretty much the same, but better than the 50D for sure.

The conclusion of the Reviews is very flattering to the 7D: class leading detail and resolution, excellent build quality etc. It got Highly Recommended Rating, I recommend that you read dpreview.com review on the 7D for more in-depth information.
