Wildlife Photographers Choose Nikon - Why?

Why Wildlife Photographers Choose Nikon?
I wanted to ask a few questions about Nikon and Canon digital SLR cameras today. Yesterday I've called my father on his cell phone and asked him, whether should I buy a Canon or Nikon SLR camera. My father's answer was very simple: "if you show me one wide life and nature photographer (a professional photographer) which uses a Canon camera, I will switch to Canon right now". This could probably be a long argument, but what my father said is probably true. Many wide life and nature photographers choose the Nikon path and by Nikon cameras and equipment instead of Canon's.

If you look at the soccer field, you can see that 99.9% of the photographers (sports photographers) used Canon equipment. In fact, when I saw some soccer games on the television, I couldn't even find one photographer who uses a Nikon DSLR camera. I'm asking this question because I'm interested to buy a new DSLR for macro and nature photography. As I currently don't own any DSLR camera, I have a freedom to choose between and Nikon camera or a Canon DSLR camera. Anything that many of you probably asked the same questions, wide there are so many Canon photographers in a soccer game? - I am hoping this discussion, because I want to get a reasonable answer that with satisfied me and help me in choosing and buying my next DSLR camera.

My main question is why wildlife photographers, choose to buy Nikon DSLR and Nikon equipment and not Canon gear?

I'm hoping that many professional photographers with participate in this discussion and help us all understand, why nature and wide life photographers choose to use Nikon DSLR equipment and not Canon DSLR equipment. Please share your opinion and help me and my blog users to get a reasonable answer for that phenomenon.

  1. I work at Calumet Photographic, a professoinals camera store, and this isn't an easy question to answer. The "right" camera depends entirely on who you are, what you shoot, the environments you'll take your camera into, and what you intend to do with the images.

I think one of the reasons you see most professional wildlife photographers with Nikon gear, is the reputation of durability that Nikon has. It's also the lens quality in Nikkor glass. I've never heard a Nikon owner complain about sharpness, but I have from a Canon owner.

I hope this insight has helped in some way.

  2. Art Wolfe may take exception to this supposition but I too use Nikon. Nikkor lenses ( I have a couple that are +30 years old ) have kept me in the Nikon system because of the 'F' mount, their durability, and rich saturated flavor. It is totally your choice, it is the photo that counts.
