If a lens is popular, why not make it more popular, and that's what Sigma did with the launch the renewed Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 Lens, making it stabilized with its OS image stabilization feature. Many photographers have decided to buy the 17-70mm lens because of its high optical quality characteristics. for some people an image stabilization can further enhance the image output quality, especially when combined with a fast aperture in low light shooting conditions.
The new Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM, offers the best from Sigma, starting with an integrated optical image stabilization system, aspherical and ELD glass elements to fight flare and distortions when shooting in wide angle. It has a large apreture (f/2.8) on its widest settings and also offers Sigma's Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM), which gives to a silent and fast focusing system.
Sigma 17-70mm OS HSM Macro has a minimum focusing distance of 22cm, which is good for shooting up close or even macro photographs (1:2.7 magnification ratio). Of course it is not intended for use as a 1:1 Macro Lens, but for people who want to exchange their kit lens for a better lens, Sigma 17-70mm is certainly a very good choice. On 2009 we can see more companies incorporating image stabilization motors inside their lenses. I think for some reason, that because the competitors like Sony and Panasonic has their Image stabilization integrated inside the camera, there is more demand for image stabilization lenses from the leading DSLR manufacturers like Canon and Nikon, but also from 3rd party lens manufacturers like Tamron and Sigma. The demand rises and therefore we see more optical stabilized lens emerging into the market.
