By reading dpreview's Nikkor 70-200mm VR II review, you can see that the new zoom lens does not disappoints. The lens was announced back in July 2009, and many photographer were waiting to read a professional unbiased review about this new anticipated lens. The older AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8G ED VR lens was already 7 years old.
Nikon's VR II
The first advantage of this new 70-200mm lens over the older one, is that the new lens includes Nikon's new vibration reduction system, called VR II. VR II offers up to four stops stabilization. One of the optical problems that many photographers reported with the older 70-200mm lens, is that optical quality of the lens in the corners was not as good as they wanted to (Soft). The new 70-200mm lens was suppose to take care of all the flaws from the previous model, and bring an almost perfect zoom lens, with the highest optical design qualities, for both amateurs and professional photographers alike. Using 21 elements in 16 groups and 7 Extraordinary Dispersion (ED) glass elements and Nikon's Nano Crystal Coating, this lens suppose to dramatically improve over the older lens.
Weather Sealed Against Moisture and Dust
Of course as a professional grade zoom lens, the Nikkor 70-200mm F2/8G ED VR II built like a tank, with magnesium alloy body, extensive sealing against moisture and dust, it suppose to be the perfect lens for photographer in the field, that need a rugged and sealed high optical quality zoom lens. Nikon 70-200mm F/2.8G ED VR II fits both DX (Cropped) and FX (Full Frame) Nikon DSLR cameras. The lens utilized 9 rounded diaphragm blades, Nikon's Ultrasonic Ring-Type motor for ultra fast internal focusing mechanism and the lens does not rotate when focusing.
Compared to the older 70-200mm F2.8G VR
On the paper it seems like the perfect telephoto zoom lens that we all been waiting for, but how it performs in the lab. For that, we of course need to check out dpreview.com Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 ED VR II lens Review to find out.
When comparing the two lenses (70-200mm F2.8 G ED VR II vs. 70-200mm F2.8 G VR), you can see that the new lens offers 4 stops of image stabilization, topping the older lens that utilizes the older vibration reduction system, which give only 3 stops advantage (at least as claimed by Nikon). The new 70-200mm VR II lens has 3 focus modes (A/M, M/A, M) compared to 2 focus modes (M/A, M) on the older 70-200mm lens.
Nikkor 70-200mm VR II weights 1540g (54.3 oz) compared to 1470g (51.9 oz). The new VR II lens is a 70g heavier, but nothing to be concerned about. The new Nikkor 70-200mm VR II is shorter in length (206mm) then the previous model. Now lets jump right on to dpreview's Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II test results.
Dpreview reports excellent image quality charactaristics on both the DX and FX DSLR cameras. If some of your were concerned about the iamge quality at 200mm, you should not be. The optical quality at 200mm is nothing less then superb. The optical stabilization works perfect and the overall feel is absolutely on the spot. The are some glitches though, and I recommend you visiting Dpreview.com Nikon 70-200mm F2.8 VR II review for more information.
