Concept Design: Canon EVIL Digital Camera - Compactly Perfect

Canon EVIL cameras (also NIkon's) are in every photography rumors websites. Should Canon release a new line of EVIL cameras, who knows. But I have decided to become a concept design artist for one day, in order to try my photo editing software skills, and see what I can come up with. Canon EVIL cameras suppose to be very small, without mirror (also called "mirrorless interchangeable lens" cameras or "ASP-C Compact Cameras"), very cute and have the a unique fashionable design. So instead of waiting for the announcement of Canon new EVIL cameras, I have tried to come up with a unique concept design, that is based on current Canon DSLR models, but much smaller, more curvy and cute design, compared to current Canon entry-level DSLR cameras. So lets see what I come up with. take a look at what I called Canon EVL" (aka EVIL, Electronic Viewfinder, Interchangeable Lens).

I have decided to make a slogan for it: "Compactly Perfect". It is a very compact EVIL camera and I am sure hope that when Canon comes up with an EVIL camera, it will be perfect!
I have used photo editing software to make the changes and come up with this "EVIL" design.

Version 2
I've been working a little bit more to present to you the second version of the Canon EVIL concept designed camera. Now I've added and HD logo at the right corner of the camera, replaced the right handle with a more beautiful one and put a solid meta line on the right grip (your left). I also made the accessory shoe like metal. Tell me if you think its look better and if you have any other suggestion, give me some ideas (good ones) and I will do my best to add them in EVIL version 3.

Version 3
I've been reading your comments on several websites and I've decided that the next variation of the Canon EVIL concept design will be, mmm... more EVIL you can say. I've flattened the top, still keeping the Canon curvy top, added a remote control detector, stereo mic for HD stereo recording, bezel line across the top of the camera and on the lens (who knows, maybe Canon will come up with their own line of lenses for the EVIL series like Sony did with theirs. Overall the "Compactly Perfect!" has gotten some modifications that suppose to give it a more "EVIL" look to be closer to how EVIL cameras look, but keep the overall concept closed to what I have started with. Oh, and I removed the 2 small button on top. Hope you like it, and again, you can give you own opinions and I will try to further enhance it on the next version 4.

Version 4
In this new design, I've have decided to bring some huge dramatic changes, and again, better EVILize the camera from previous designs. After reading Yousuf comments (thanks), I have opted to a flat top design. Added a combination of black glossy & matte finish, a metal piece on the handle with "13.6 Mega Pixel" text embedded on it. I was going to the Classic-retro design, with a combination of a modern, prestige & silky look to it. I also changed and minimized the lens extraction handle too. The "EVL" sign went to the glossy part of the EVIL camera, because the golden text goes well with the glossy black background, looks more prestige I think. The grip is less pronounced one, so it won't look like a DSLR-like camera and give the camera a thinner look overall. I also played with the contrast to make it more stylish and modern and emphasize the metal parts. The shutter button wen to the top and was miniaturized, after all, it suppose to be a EVIL digital camera. So the results can be seen down below, and I hope that you'll like this EVIL design. Oh, I also have used a Bordeaux and Honey-Brown colors to the cameras at the bottom to make it more retro-style.

In the next version, I think that I will also work on the lens. This lens is an image I've bought from istockphoto, and I think I will search to find a better looking lens that will better fit the camera. What do you think, looks "EVIL" enough?

Version 5
I must be honest, I didn't believe that I will enjoy designing so much and get to make this version. This time I probably got really creative. I wanted to make the camera even more EVIL, but not just EVIL, but give it a very Prestige (Luxury) look and feel.  Some will call it more 'feminine' I guess, but the main target was to improve over version and give it an elegant touch, so the final result can be a Prestige Digital Camera with Interchangeable lenses. I gave it different colors (Red, Bordeaux, Leather Light-Brown and Dark Chocolate). The camera has to look really appealing, so I removed the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV from the right side, because it was too bulky and it seems that it didn't belong there (although I will use it for the next version, so people can see the size differences). I've added a "prestige" signature in handwriting at the top-left corner. The main Canon EVIL camera at the center (large) is in red, emphasizing the overall Luxury look. Added a touch of diamonds at the right side of the picture and some other minor fixes like removing distracting elements (ex. accessory shoe).

I hope that you like this new EVIL-Prestige Digital Camera that was made after large amount of modifications and photo editing (and many working hours without sleep). I hope that women will like this camera design too. Kind of a pocket-camera that every woman will want in her Louis Vuitton bag. So take a look at the brand new 'Canon EVIL' digital camera and let me know what you think. Thanks!

Also I become a fan of creating  atmospheric environment for products. But because I don't have too much spare time, I will concentrate on the EVIL camera itself, less on the overall atmosphere of the final image.

Progress...
So what we had so far? - Here is my EVILUTION (aka EVIL Evolution), from the first first to the last. Same image further edited using photo editing software.

Canon EVIL EVILution from the first stage to the most updated one (more to come..)

Feel free to share the image, but "AS IS", without modifications. Tell me what you think about it, and what you generally think about EVIL cameras.

  1. Need a little more height :-)

  2. The height is related probably in perspective to the large DSLR on the right side, but I will consider this as well. I want some very unique features that can be visually displayed, so I can add them to V3. Furthermore, What colors do your prefer most?

  3. i want the nikon version to use my existing lens without an adaptor like the sony EVIL does...

  4. I think that designing a Nikon EVIL can be very Interesting challenge indeed. Don't give me to many ideas...LOL. I don't know if Pentax will come up with their own type of EVIL cameras, but photo editing a Pentax EVIL camera can be a really cool challenge.. already thinking a very cool black finish compact camera with bright green metal lines... oh, maybe I will jut go with the Nikon and Canon EVIL-series for now and after that, I will think about EVILizing Pentax.

  5. it looks little more than a dslr with the head lopped off.

i seriously doubt canon would have 'EVIL' anywhere in their marketing campaign.

grip should be smaller since the body is smaller and lighter.

body likely to be narrower as well and possibly more square.

  6. Since it's not an SLR, it need not look like one. Removing the hump makes it a bit odd looking. Need to put the flash somewhere. Why not remove the black top part altogether or make it more flat and put a Canon lens in front? Think abot the Panasonic GF1, Canon G11 or older pre-EOS Canon models...just wanted to give you some thoughts.

  7. Love them, real beautifully done.

  8. Yousuf, I have taken you comments into consideration, and in Canon EVIL version 4, I will probably make the top more flat and probably also publish a side image, so it will better emphasize the thin depth of the camera. Also I am working on designing the back part, a little bit more tricky, but can be done. Many thanks for your comments, I will surely keep that in mind.

  9. Although this design is great i do not agree with it
because I think that Canon will go for a more retro design

  10. maiacoimbra, I have listened to you comments and also Yousuf's comments, and have decided to go "extreme" and make it much more EVIL. This time you can see that the top part was removed, and the camera looks thinner. I have also tried to combine both the Retro look and the modern look, by putting a glossy finish on the top and bottom parts of the camera, and keep the middle part matte finish. I hope that now it looks more retro-style camera, but also modern enough to keep it stylish so people will love it and want to show it to their friends.

  11. Thanks Idan. I just expressed my thoughts. It will be good to see the thoughts turning into someting visible (if not touchable). By the way, don't forget a jogwheel at the back!

  12. I will be glad to hear more ideas an wishes for the next Canon EVL version 5. What you want int it, what to correct, any ideas will be welcomed!

  13. Well done Idan! Looks a lot nicer. Just a few more comments: The vertical bar on the grip was better although looked like a Panasonic. I would think about something bright and colourful but small...like the red triangle on the Nikons. Also need to think about the ergonomics or 'the man behind the machine'. The height should be about the size of an average persons hand and little sculpting on the grip would make it comfortable to hold on.

Well, Idan I don't know how long you are going to continue. For me, it was good fun for the weekend. A busy week is ahead.....Cheers.

  14. I will save my money and buy Leica M9 with 35mm and 75mm lenses..

  15. Whats up with the weird lens numbers? I think Canon would give it a normal 18-55 kitlens. Also think Canon would produce the camera in only black and silver version like what they did in the past. And maybe more towards G11 body with an interchangeable lens.

  16. Yousuf, thanks for your supported comments. I am glad that you like it and I intend to to some major improvement over the current model. The first thing is the camera grip, which I intend to make bigger, but give it a modern curvy shape.

Chung Dha Lam, I will probably will also add a metal finish to the next one and change the lens for something more appropriate. Again thanks for helping me out on this.

    Idan.

  17. Sorry, forgot to mention...Please check the Leica X1 before making your final version.

  18. Thanks Yousuf, I will certainty take a look and get inspiration for my next EVIL camera design. I have also decided to take things a little bit further, and create a more 'Magazine' style designs, so the digital camera itself will be surrounded by a complement artistic background as the final touch. I will try to brings some real improvements and I have been hanging around in many Four-Thirds dedicated websites and other digital cameras reviews sites to see some pictures of the product from different angles (need to do the back and sides soon).

I also visited some Japanese and Chinese photography sites to get more inspiration for my next version 6 EVIL camera.

Again, thank you so much for your support, I appreciate it more then you think.

  19. I think you should add dimensions (in mm) around the EVIL, and perhaps even some camera & lens specifications (I'm talking about real-world physically possible specs, not imaginary ones).

Overall, I think you should concentrate on a design that resembles the Canon 550D (AKA T2i).
It has a very appealing curvy shape, so your EVIL would need to be a kind of a smaller version of that.

All in all, very nice job.

  20. much better, though i like 4 better than 5.

what happened to the lugs and hot shoe?

    need more retro, less 'sony'.

  21. Wait for the next version, a surprise !

  22. looking forward to it... good job so far :)

  23. Thanks! - I am sharpening my photo editing skills, and trying to bring more unique and interesting camera designs. I think if this went well, I will make some more pretty soon. But first things first, let's go and finish my next EVIL camera design, and continue from there. BTW: I want to hear from you, what do you want me to design next? -- You decide and I will DO!

  24. i'd like to see an on-board flash, a textured rubber grip, front control wheel and at least one top dial.

  25. Roger that. I will start working on a new camera model pretty soon and take you comments into consideration. Thanks.

  26. E.v.i.l. stands for Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable lens. But there is no Viewfinder on these designs. So at the moment you just have an i.l. camera. The viewfinder is essential for professional handling of the camera, and must have a large enough display with a high enough resolution to manually focus easily. As well as having a comfortable eye peice. So it cant just be a little dinky thing. something that comes out over the lens a little might be needed. And maybe it could rotate at the connection were the hot-shoe is to be inline with the camera body for transportation.

  27. Yep, maybe I was too into the design :)

Next time I will look better into the 'fine' details.

    Thanks!
