Many people on digital photography forums ask how important is HD movie capabilities in DSLR cameras. This is probably a good question, but every photographer need to ask this question for himself. I mean, you should ask yourself if you need the HD video option in your next DSLR camera?
I can just give you my opinion about that. Many people who want to shoot pictures and movies and share it on the web, for them, having a High-Definition video shooting option (720p or 1080p), will probably best to at least take that into account. The web keeps evolving very fast, and video are the way of the future. If you want to satisfy you online website visitors, you should have on-demand videos for almost any purpose. Whether it is for a review that you are writing, a travel agency, online news magazine, etc. The combination of both videos and images for any given website, will better satisfy your online visitors experience, and will help you get more loyal customers coming back for more.
I personally want a HD DSLR camera in my photography bag, but it is also first need to be a very good DSLR camera first. I rather have the option to shoot both stills and videos with the same camera, rather having two different camera for each purpose (DSLR & Camcoder). Anyways, you should also take into consideration the fact that DSLR cameras has a larger sensor compared to consumer camcorders. It means that you can shoot in low light conditions and get a control over the depth of field, and option that is not available in consumer camcorders with a much smaller CCD camera sensor. The prices of DSLR cameras with HD clips video capabilities are pretty low, that means that you don't have to pay extra to have this HD recording option, it just comes as an extra feature in many entry level and enthusiast DSLR cameras today.
If you wanted to know which HD video quality is better, the one on Nikon cameras or in Canon cameras? -- Many will probably agree that Canon has the edge in this area, no doubt about it. Many photographers adapt the fact that videos are part of the forever evolving Internet and they start shooting videos with their DSLRs and learn how to use current video editing software (Adobe Premiere, Corel VideoStudio Pro X3, Magix Movie Edit Pro, Pinnacle Studio, Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum, Roxio Creator and others).
Learning how to edit videos needn't be difficult as you might think. Many photographers are even up to the challenge and learn how to use Adobe After Effects to further enhance their videos by combining special effects and transitions and even edit the sound, just to make their videos more appealing to their online website visitors.
So in my opinion, it is better to buy a DSLR camera with HD video capabilities than one with don't have it. At the near future, I think that it will be a feature in every DSLR camera, so you actually won't have any option but to accept it and learn how to make the best of it. Check out HD video samples from Canon EOS 7D and you will know what I am talking about.
Here is a HD movie sample called "Another Night in Beijing", taken with the Canon EOS 7D DSLR camera, which allows you to shoot high quality HD videos:
Here is a another HD video sample called "In The Park", taken with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II:
As you can see, the video quality is nothing but superb. Having the option to shoot HD 720p/1080p with such a great quality, can really extend every photographer creativity. I have decided to learn how to edit videos using Adobe Premiere and even start learning Adobe After Effects by watching video tutorials. My conclusion: Don't skip it, search for a DSLR camera with HD shooting capability. Even if you don't currently need it, in the near future you will probably will.
