Nikon Coolpix S1100pj Camera with Built-in Projector - 47 inch projection

Nikon Coolpix S1100pj (pj = projector) is a digital camera with integrated projector. you probably saw this coming, but from Nikon?.  I love technology innovations, and I get excited every time I write and article about unique cameras like the S1100pj.  The Coolpix S1100pj replaces the Award-Winning (DYA Award 2010) revolutionary S1000pj camera. Nikon COOLPIX S1000pj was the first digital camera with built-in projector. The S1000pj was released in 2009, and now its time for a new version that will replace the older one.

Nikon has managed to increase the projector brightness by 40%, from 10 lumens to 14 lumens. Now you can project images up to 240 cm and also up to 47-inch projection display size. This is a new technology and we will probably see more digital cameras equipped with this function very soon. Before we will try to figure out, what we can do with the Nikon Coolpix S1100pj projector function, let's see what other features are included in this unique compact and advanced digital camera.


Nikon Coolpix S1100pj comes with a 14.1-megapixel CCD sensor (1/2.3"). The S1100pj can record HD 720p movies at 30 frames per second frame rate (other low res videos are also available). S1100pj features a 5x Zoom-Nikkor 28-149mm f/3.9-5.8 lens with minimum focus distance of 30cm and 3cm for macro shots. You can shoot images with ISO sensitivities starting from ISO 80, up to ISO 6400 (ISO 3200 & 6400, only under 3MP images).  On the back you can find a 3.0-inch 460,000 dots LCD display with anti-reflection coating. The Nikon Coolpix S1100pj support the new SDXC large capacity card formats.

As we told you earlier, this is the second version of the already very successful and award-winning S1000pj. The Nikon Coolpix has a built-on projection unit that can project images from 5 to 47-inch. The built-in projector has a distance limit in which it can display the image at optimal quality, also called "Throw distance"  . The throw distance of the Nikon S1100pj is from ~26mm to ~240cm. The built-in projector unit project VGA resolution image. Of course in the future we will see more advanced version of those types of cameras, with better projected resolution.

Furthermore, you can connect the Nikon Coolpix S1100pj to your computer via USB cable and project the computer display on the projected surface. Nikon has posted a note on their website, saying that a dedicated driver software is required in order to accomplish this.  You can take control of the projected image using the large 3-inch touch screen on the back of the S1100pj digital camera. You can draw notes on top of the projected image. Retouching images is very easy with the Nikon Coolpix S1100pj camera. When in playback mode, you can tap the back touch-screen to apply different effects like: Soft, selective color, fisheye & miniature (looks familiar, you can find it also on the Canon PowerShot S95) and others.

So what can you do with the built-in projector?
Well, you can show images to your friends in class without the need for a computer. You can share you memories with your friends where no computer or TV is available. You can use the built-in projector to present business slide-show presentations, portfolio and designs. I think you start to understand how useful it is for some people. Nikon Coolpix S1100pj as a dedicated projector button on the top of the camera. Furthermore, S1100pj has a projector stand underneath the camera for easy layout. The projector stand gives 10-degree angle. The camera comes with a software that also enables you to import PowerPoint® presentation files and convert them into JPEG images. So when downloaded to your SD memory card, you can project them later on.

I must admit that I love seeing Nikon innovating. I think that the new COOLPIX S1100pj will be even more popular than the previous version. It has HD 720p Movie recording feature, built-in VGA projector, 3-inch touch screen, high ISO sensitivities, 14.1MP CCD & support for latest SDXC high capacity memory card. The camera battery allows for ~220 shots or 1 h 35 min video recording in 720p HD. The Coolpix S1100pj weights 180g (battery included).
