Two days ago, DigitalRevTV uploaded a very nice video that compares the Olympus E-PL2 vs Lomo LC-A. The Lomo LC-A camera is a fixed lens 35mm compact camera that was announced back in 1984. This film point-and-shoot camera was later replaced by the LC-A+ model.
You are probably asking what is a LOMO camera and what to special about it that DigitalRev has decided to compare it to the Oly E-PL2? - well, Lomo cameras are well known for their unique photos, usually with vignettes, contrasty and highly saturated colors. It gives the photo a distinctive look, which could be achieved with those type of cameras.
LOMO Cameras
LOMO cameras comes with a fixed lens and every model has its own unique characteristics. For example, the LOMO LC-A features a Minitar 1 32mm f/2.8 lens, while another model features a fisheye lens. After reading about Lomography on Wikipedia, I've discovered that people buy this camera because of the unique effects that it produces. Furthermore, it seems that their is a group called "Lomographers", which is the name given for people who shot with Lomo cameras.
There is plenty of information about Lomography on the Internet. This photography niche is even very popular today. There are even Adobe Photoshop tutorials that teach you how to replicate the Lomography effect. There is much more to it, you can more information about it on lomography.com. There is even a popular Flickr group called LOMO, which is dedicated to this form of photography.
Before we continue, I recommend watching this video from DigitalRevTV to get familiar with Lomography!
Buying a Lomo Camera
If you want to purchase one of those unique cameras, you can check out lomography.com shop. For example, you can purchase the LOMO LC-A+ white special edition for $399, Lomo LC-A+ Gold for $600, LC-A refurbished camera for $200 and LOMO LC-A+ RL package for $280.
No doubt that Lomo cameras produce a unique effect which I personally really like. It gives the image a touch of imperfection, which looks unique and artistic. Kai from DigitalRev wanted to see how the LOMO LC-A compares to the Olympus E-PL2, comparing the output of both cameras. Of course the Oly didn't come close to achieve this effect.
Because we are in the digital era, this effect can easily be achieved with photo editing software. Even so, if you try to convince Lomo photographers to make this effect using Adobe Photoshop filters, I am sure that you will fail.
No doubt that LOMO 35mm film cameras produce a very unique effect. I really like this effect but I don't intend to purchase one for myself. Maybe I will try to play with Photoshop and see if I could come with some nice looking results.
Wait, why just throw word in the air, let me try to do it right now and see what I can come up with...
