Just came across a very interesting article on BJP about Hasselblad. For those of you who don't know, Hasselblad is a manufacturer of medium-format cameras. The company has recently been sold by Hong-Kong-based Shriro Group to a private equity firm Ventizz Capital Fund IV. Hasselblad was first owned by a Swedish company, and now its back to its original European roots.
As a leader in the Medium-format camera's industry, Hasselblad always looks for way to do its best to introduce new features and upgrades that will match the demands of professional photographers in many niche markets. Hasselblad are expensive cameras. Those who buy it, except the best image quality and the best service. Furthermore, they expect the company to listen to their demands, not just because it's a niche market, but because the applications that those type of cameras are used for.
Hasselblad has recently opened a new research department that its missions is to keep a close relationship with its current customers and see what features they want to see in future models and what features that dislike. The first research department will be dedicated to serve aerial specialist. Hasselblad even built a special website dedicated for Aerial photography at www.hasselbladaerial.com.
This website is dedicated to those photographers who are in the Aerial photography field. Hasselblad also manufactured the H4D, a medium-format camera, which was designed for the strict demands of Aerial photographers and its advanced applications (ie. Aerial mapping).
H4D Aerial was designed with a advanced locking mechanism to prevent movement that is caused by aircraft vibrations. There is also an option for synchronized exposures when shooting with several cameras, GPS for geotagging, in-lens temperature and so on.
The thing is that Hasselblad has gotten to a place that they know the importance of listening very carefully to their customer's demands. They don't expect to build a camera for every niche market, but they intend to enhanced and upgrade their cameras to answer many of those expectations.
The H4D Aerial is probably a niche market that Hasselblad really wants to embrace. If Hasselblad won't do it, its competitors will. I also think that the Aerial photography industry is certainly an important one due to the amount of money that is spent on photography equipment in this industry.
For those of you who start getting interested in medium-format photography and Hasselblad camera, you probably know that it doesn't come cheap. For example, the Hasselblad H4D-50 Medium Format Camera costs around $29K on Amazon. Of course the image quality is out of this world. If you are new to this type of photography, read my medium-format photography article which will give you a few insights about this industry.
