JPEG online image compression/optimization Service - JPEGmini

JPEGmini is a new online image optimization/compression service that was designed to reduce the file size of JPEG images. I personally use them quite a lot. The benefits are of course a high reduction of image files and bandwidth preservation. JPEGmini promises the highest compression ratio available today, up to 5x a reduction from the original image size.

I've tested JPEGMini myself and was quite surprised with the results. The image was highly compressed, but without a visual loss of image quality, which is great. I think that I've found two of my favorite image compression service: PNGPuny for PGN files and JPEGMini for JPEG files. Both are among the best image compressors service that you can find right now. JPEGMini has some sample images presented on the main page, where you can see and test the compression visuals yourself. You can download the original files and test it yourself to see that the compression works as intended and as advertised.

You can start using the service without registration by uploading a photo from the homepage buy clicking the upload button. The second option is to register the website and create online albums where you can upload photos and send them to your Flickr or Picasa account, or just download the compressed JPEG file to your computer and store it locally.

I tried to upload a few JPEG files after registering and indeed the compression has done a very good job reducing the file size of my JPEG images. Its still a bi buggy though, and when I've uploaded some photos it didn't let me choose an already existent album and some of the uploaded images (even when processed), didn't show in the created albums. I was able to process one JPEG image of a digital camera that weights 71KB and the result was an image weighting just 41K

Even the screenshot JPEG image above was compressed from 30KB to 17KB. By utilizing this service, you can certainly save quite a lot of bandwidth, especially for sites that use a lot of JPEG images. I haven't found information about an API that will allow developers to use the service from a web application/ However, in their getsatisfaction support page I've found this. That means that API will be available in the future.

So test this JPEG image compression service and see how it works for you.
