Sigma SD16 Soon? - Interview with Sigma Chief Operating Officer

Dpreview posts and interview with Sigma Chief Operating Officer, Kazuto Yamaki. One of the interesting parts of the interview is related to the price of the SD1. For those who didn't hear about Sigma SD1 DSLR camera. This is Sigma's flagship DSLR camera, carrying a unique design 3-layer Foveon sensor.

There are many Sigma photographers worldwide, which are loyal to the company and believe its technology innovation and vision. However, the when Sigma released the SD1, it priced it much higher for many photographer's reach. That brought a wave of many negative talkbacks all over the web. Right now the SD1 price stands just under $7000, but still very expensive for most of Sigma photographers, who have been waiting a few years to upgrade from their older SD15/SD14 camera.

According to Kazuto Yamaki, Sigma have plans of releasing a new cheaper model in the future, one that will be much cheaper than the flagship model, the SD1. In order to do that, Sigma needs to reduce the manufacturing costs, so they can provide their loyal customers with new innovative products, one that they can afford and upgrade to.

Here's a guy who have bought the SD1 and wanted to share its purchase on video:

Whether this new camera (Sigma SD16?) will be available in 2012, nothing has been said in the interview However, I have a good feeling that Sigma too, knows that they time doesn't stand in its favor. Let's just hope that we will see a new Foveon-based camera soon, one that most of us can afford and enjoy shooting with.
